Umberto Boccioni

Born in 1882, Boccioni was also one of the leading futuristic artists as his work is often used to represent it best. He concentrated on causing controversy, following his fellow futurist Balla. He focused on speed, dynamics and the darker things in life at the time. He concentrated on pollution for a period, which wasn't exactly uplifting for the general population. He focused on it because it represented change, and the modern era at the time. again, likewise to Balla, his work verged closer to abstraction as futurism became mysterious and less clear.

He also Delved into sculpturing where he also carried the idea of futurism. He wanted to show movement, time, space, speed but in a sculpture. He managed to achieve this when he created Unique forms of continuity in space in 1913.
Boccioni's main aim was to depict aspects of life at the time. Modern machinery as well as technology, new inventions etc. He is one of the most remembered futuristic artists due to his unique style and outrages pieces.

Giacomo Balla

Born in 1871, Giacomo was one of the few artists that made a telling impact and impression on futurism. His first telling impact on futurism, was to depict the aspects of time, space and speed through the showcase of paint. Around 1914, he moved on to try and show movement and light in his pieces, but didn't really master it and ended up verging closer to total abstraction.
'Dinamismo di un cane al guinzaglio' (1912)
As you can see from the painting above, he enjoyed trying to represent movement in a snapshot. Very well delivered as shown in this piece. As this type of Art had not really been created before it was fresh. He wanted to test the original idea of a traditional painting which is really solid and picture like. I think this is why futurism was such a vital era in the Art industry.

I think that Balla portrayed his work well and it was easy to understand the concept of his art. I prefer his abstract illusion work of time, Speed and strength because I think it is quite hard for somebody to show this concept on paper.

A new approach to Art brought by the Italians. Its main inspirations were current subjects at the time where machinery, and manufacture were at their peak. It demonstrated strength, speed and anything new in the best possible way it could.

It was a movement in which it didn't really follow on from previous movements and carried very different and fresh motives as to what Art should look like. It embraced the current inventions and devices that made it easier for us to live. Things like technology, transport and architecture were used as a base of futurism for artists to distort and project however they felt about it.
The main aim of futurism, was to attract attention, to anger and amaze people, causing wide spread controversy.
They not only portrayed futurism through the medium on painting, but used sculpture as well as furniture and decoration.
