Competition brief

Band Promotion

We have been given the task to enter a competition online, in which we have to submit our own design. We were given the choice to find any competition that we wanted and progress from there. After looking on a few of the websites we were given, I found a few competitions which suit my interests. One in particular which caught my eye is to design a poster for the band Stereophonics. The task is to design a poster from their up and coming tour, inspired by their most recent album 'graffiti on the train'.

As I think the task given is quite minimal, I am going to expand and design a t-shirt, the tickets, and flyers for the event. The brief specifically asks us to focus on their album 'graffiti on the train'', and to take some form of inspiration from specific songs.
Here are a lists of the songs on the album:

1. We Share the Same Sun
2. Graffiti on the Train
3. Indian Summer
4. Take Me
5. Catacomb
6. Roll the Dice
7. Violins and Tambourines
8. Been Caught Cheating
9. In a Moment
10. No-one's Perfect

This is actually the winner of the competition I am basing my brief on. The brief asks you to design a poster which will relate to one of the songs off the album. We were told to design a poster which would be imaginative and creative. In my personal opinion, I disagree that this was the best possible design. I feel that the title looks a poor quality, and the imagery and text on the left hand side don't configure together very well. We have been told not to use official images of the band and not to focus on the actual title 'graffiti on the train' too much.
I want to try and re-invent this idea, by adding my own illustrations.

This is another entry what I had found on the official website. I much prefer this type of design as I am quite fond of the illustration style. It uses the figure of the woman which features in the video given on the brief. I like the way the designer has adapted the image to also feature as part of the eye. It looks slightly like a poster for a film. I could take some sort of inspiration from this design.

Again, this is another one of the designs entered in the competition. This is a very well thought out and drawn illustration, but I don't really see the relevance to the brief. I think the best possible way for me to create an in depth illustration could be to draw it myself.

Looking at the the video given, and having a listen to the album itself, i get a sort of colourful native theme from it.  I think this would be quite a unique route to take. In a few of the entries I looked at, some feature an ox. This is related to the Stereophonics album art.

This is another one of the entries for the competition. This is the ox that I was referring to previously. I want to try and incorporate this into my theme somehow. The ox has played a large factor in my influence to base it around the native theme, as it is a typically native animal.
I also need to think about the way I am going to place my text. I have to include the the title 'Stereophonics' as well as the tour dates also, so I can't make the imagery too over powering.

This is the current album cover for their album 'grafitti on the train'. I wanted to see if I could gain any sort of inspiration off it to help me develop my own work. As you can see, it is already a pretty basic design.

This is an additional design for the current album 'graffiti on the train'. This is alot more abstract and almost looks child like. To me personally, it looks slightly tribal, and this ties in well with the theme I am wanting to take forward. The impression I get from the music when Ive listened to it is that its very different, and is not like previous work that they've produced.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcguxHc4hiU This is the video which we have been told we can gain inspiration off.

These are a few of screen shots from the video we have been given to analyse. The video depicts two complete strangers that meet on a train. The actual music to me sounds quite indian to me. As you can see, the colours used in the video are quite bright with plenty of golds etc being used. I think this has to play a part in my piece as we have been asked to relate our piece to their own work. Looking at other entries for the competition, they have just taken the actual images out of the video and edited them. The brief asks us not to do this so I am definitely going to go down the abstract route.

I need to now develop my own native design. I need to look at different types of patterns and styles to adapt my own poster.

This is the type of art which I want to replicate in my own work. Looking at the other entries, I feel that it would stand out as its quite perculiar. As stated before, I think drafting in the ox as well as other native animals could work well in my designs. Looking at the colours, it seems that black and red seem to be the most dominant colours.
From what I have seen, alot of the native art seems to be based around animals. The majority being birds. The designs all seem to take on the same look, and involve 'eye's' in random places. i think that I should definateley take on this animal theme as it seems to be very popular.  Again the consistency is there with the colour scheme, black's and red's more prominant.

The native theme consists of strange, distorted faces and shapes, almost a bit Art Deco type. I feel that I could potentially use a distorted face in my piece as again it seems to be one of the main focus' in this style.

Again, pictured to the left, is a bird in the same style. Black seems to be the outlining colour for every piece Ive seen.
