  Work Based Learning 3

For this brief, we have been tasked to come up with a campaign to promote organ donation. As we all know, it is vital that as many people as possible donate as certain individuals can be saved. I will look at previous posters, advertisements etc. Then I will decide the best way to move forward and strategy to take in terms of researching and develop my ideas to generate the best possible outcome.

Organ Donation

Organ donation is a very serious matter, and people are constantly thinking of the best way to encourage others to sign up. When you think of organ donation, the primary colour most people think about is red. Red represents all forms of health orientated subjects (e.g giving blood etc).

This is an example of a poster I have found online. As you can see, it's very basic but sends out a strong message. It demonstrates that only one person can make a difference to many others. There are only two primary colours used in the piece but they work well together.

This is what the official donor card looks like once you have signed up. I could potentially look at adapting this concept and creating my own form of design. Again, the primary colours used are red and blue. This is the official card, so as you can imagine, the majority of poster campaigns etc are going to follow suit.

This is a very basic poster released by the government to encourage people to join. In my opinion it seems that it is a weak form of advertising. In my opinion there is no way of demonstrating the benefits giving, as well as showing no details on how to actually donate. The public need to see who's lives they can affect by giving, showing the benefits. Also, I think that the actual text has a huge part to play as it needs to be clear and demonstrate the cause correctly.
As you can see, they require a re-design as the current design looks bland and very basic.

Again, this design demonstrates another ad produced by the NHS, It again is a very basic design, but i think this stands out to the public more as it has a slogan attached to it to encourage donation. The primary colours used again are red, blue and white. I will need to consider other colours in my own designs as giving the concept a new colour scheme could be beneficial to the cause.

This is an image which i found online also. This is a really clever way of demonstrating that everyone deserves a chance, no matter what age. It's message is that you can make a difference by donating, regardless of how old the person is. This is an effective way of advertisement as it grabs the viewers attention immediately. Showing a fully grown woman in a cradling baby position.
This is a great form of shock advertising; a type that will grab the viewers attention.

In my opinion this is a very effective way of making people take action on this matter. It may not be to everybody's taste as it personally makes an accusation but sometimes its the best way to be if you want to make something happen. It asks the viewer the question whether they should save 'Jill's' life or not. They have pictured Jill on the background with a dark background to add extra effect to the message they're putting out. This is an add provided by the group 'healthier scotland'. I will have to consider this sort of approach whilst deciding what route to choose  in my own form of design.

This is also a form of advertisement which grabbed my attention whilst browsing on the internet. It shows the outline of a body at a murder scene. Showing two blood marks of where the kidneys would feature on the body. This tells us that even in a scenario like this, you can still be given the opportnity to save somebody else's life with what you leave behind. It is effectively showing the best out of a bad situation. With Organ Donation, they prefer to use the organs of younger people, so on the off chance that something like this was unfortunate to happen, their organs would be most likely to be used.

This follows suit to the previous advertisement shown above. This also shows what looks like a car accident with a young person involved. The caption at the bottom says 'you can be a hero after you die'. Demonstrating the positives you can gain from death. This in my opinion is an effective way of advertisement as it shocks the audience.

This is a very different approach to persuading people to donate their organs. It has been used by 'france adot'. It tries to show that people can change and become a better person after previously being in the wrong. The actual image shows a tattoo of 'god hates fags' with stitch marks over it. Showing that somebody has donated their organs to help somebody even though they have been selfish previously. Although this is an effective way of advertisement, it targets a specific group of people which have done wrong before. It does show that there is good in all people but I don't think it is audience friendly.

This advert shows a different form of advertisement. It demonstrates two different scenarios. One of a person whom requires an organ to save their life, and one whom is healthy who is putting off signing up to be on the organ donation register. It is the same person just in two different states. This encourages people to sign up as if the boot was on the other foot, and if it was you who needed the organ, it would change your decision. These are all creative ways of persuading people to sign up, I need to see what factors I can adopt into my own designs.

This is another campaign promoted by 'france adot'. This is the type of advertising that I think reaches out to the public most effectively. It demonstrates the two two people who have featured in the exchange of the donation. Obviously the person whom has passed on and donated their organs has faded away. This shows clearly the appreciation from the person who has received the organ. Looking at these advertisements, there is no form which shows the benefits of donation(e.g life after the transplant).

This again sends out quite a powerful message. It again shows the two ways you can go about either donating or not. Showing that if you do not sign up you will be wasting vital organs that could save lives; in this case a little girl. It is trying to show that donating is the best option to choose as once you've passed, your organs are useless to you regardless.

This poster depicts a basic heart with a slogan shown above it. I could potentially use this sort of tactic when designing my own posters. A catchy slogan can often sculpture a full poster range. There are also statistics shown at the bottom which the audience will see after the initial slogan has captured them. The way the text and images work together are vital as you need to project the message in the best possible way. Also the colour of the background and font colours need to work well in correlation as it needs to be clear.

My Idea

After looking at various different approaches into  advertising with organ donation, I have decided to run down a very different idea method. In the pieces I have looked at they very much focus on the consequences if you don't donate. They focus on the organs themselves, picturing them missing etc which I don't think appeals to the audience.

I want to look at the benefits after you've donated an organ to somebody. So I think depicting life events which somebody goes through and describing how it was made possible to happen would be a creative route to go down. I need to pick out various milestone moments in somebodies life that will show this .e.g marriage, birthdays, graduation, anniversaries etc.
I think this will make people aware that life should be available to live for everybody, and when you pass on, you should do anything to help another life prolong.

How to take this on?

I need to find a few different  scenarios in life and show how certain individuals were able to achieve these via the help of others. Slogans like 'Tom was able to celebrate his wedding day with the help of Holly' and 'Sam celebrated his 18th birthday with the help of Jack'.

I want to design a situation where it shows the event in process. The design has to look sleek and professional and still show the main aim in a simple way. It's a very different approach to what has been done before as I will be generating images which depict happiness. A positive approach in my opinion would be more persuasive as people can see what they will achieve through giving.

At this stage, I still don't know what type of route to follow in terms of design. I could make the piece mainly image orientated or go down the typography route. The design is going to be personal to certain individuals (e.g Holly was able to celebrate her birthday with the help of Paul); so generating an image of the person celebrating their day would be ideal.

Based on poster campaigns i have already looked at, I decided to mock up some posters with images generated by myself.

I have taken images found by myself and placed them in my own form of design. As you can see, this piece shows a prom taking place. I have then added the extra information at the bottom along with the NHS logo at the top. I like the colours involved in this as they run in consistency with previous designs. I think the red signifies organ donation overall, and I don't want to take away all the aspects of identity.  I chose to select the prom image as it is a milestone moment of a young person's life.

An 18th birthday is a huge occasion in any persons life. Again, I followed the same design template as before but with a different image. I decided to show my tutor and fellow class mates after I had mocked these basic designs up to gain some feedback. The majority liked the design of the template, stating it looked professional etc. But the images used in the posters didn't complement the piece at all. I agree that the colour effect used on the image doesn't really make the piece stand out at all. I need to look at possibly using alternative images or changing the design completely. The piece is meant to depict positivity and the the black and white effect makes it look bland and lifeless.

This is the third of my posters which I mocked up. It shows a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary. Personally I like the image itself but again the effect put on it doesn't really compliment the cause. Taking into consideration the feedback I have received, I need to re-think how I am to approach my designs. After discussing different ways to approach the brief, I have decided that trying to capture a moment like this would be time consuming and to get such images for the posters would be extremely costly as they need to be a good quality. I have decided therefore, that I am going to take certain aspects out of each scenario and use them in a typography based piece. For example if its a wedding the aspects from that are endless. I could use part of the dress, cake, champagne glasses etc. I need to somehow mix the typography and imagery together to work in correlation.

Typography

I need to create some sort of design which will grab the viewers attention initially, but at the same time driving the message of organ donation home. Looking at this piece on the left, it shows you text doesn't have to work on a flat base. It can alternate in size and colour; it is also important to find the right balance in the piece also. This caught my eye as it is a different type of typography style. I want to keep some form of structure within my designs though so I won't be using too many text styles. The design needs to look professional and represent donation well so I think involving too many alternatives could take away the seriousness of the work.

This piece particularly caught my eye, due to the way different sorts of shapes are incorporated into the piece. I like the way each like is represented with an image relevant to itself; i think it gives the line an extra kick adding a visual. This is the type of method I am wanting to use when designing my own finals. I like the way there are only two colours used also in this piece; the black primary colour and the background which is a grainy beige. The background colour is also an important factor. I like the way the piece is central to the page also. All factors in the piece need to align to keep the designs consistent.

In this piece the sentence itself is quite short, but the designer has planned it out to look much larger. They have adapted some of the lettering into visual pieces. For example, the 'time' piece at the top is actually in a clock. Small visuals like this compliment the work. The font I use has to be suitable for the cause so a mix between serif and san serif fonts would have to be considered.

I am particularly fond of designs like this which involve different shapes and fonts which alternate in size so its legible. This piece caught my eye again as the imagery at the top draws the attention. The background again draws the attention immediately. The forefront colours work well in conjunction with the background which is very important.

This piece again is central to the page with the image featuring at the top. This is a method I could potentially use when designing my own finals.  I will also be adjusting the size of the text to how important it is in the piece.

All of the work which I am analyzing are very similar. I have specifically picked these out as I want my designs to contain some of the factors used in these pieces. Again this piece relies majorly on its colouring. The background is very bright and the font colours run well in correlation with it. Abstract lines and dots have been used quite frequently in the pieces I have looked at already; so I will contemplate using them in my own designs.

This is a quotation but has been adapted to look very abstract. This is my favourite piece so far which I have looked at as the lettering is not grid formed. The fonts used are basic, but the mix of sizes, as well as the leading, and thickness create a challenging piece of typography. The magnifying glass is the first thing to catch the viewers eye but is used to work in correlation with the text. I need to look at developing methods like this for my own designs.

This is a poster used for a music festival. It lists numerous band names, which of course need to have their own identity on the poster, so you can differenciate. Often on festival posters like this one, the bands which are bigger and more popular often are pictured in bigger, bolder font as they want to capture the audience. This is often the headlining act. I like the way the designer has arranged the information into a block order, as it reads well; and how the imagery used blends into the piece.

Milestone moments

I need to now look at what scenarios I am going to choose for my final pieces.

  • Birth, Christening
  • Riding a bike
  • 18th Birthday
  • 21st Birthday
  • First day of school
  • Graduation
  • Marriage
  • Anniversary
  • 1st born
  • Honeymoon
  • Job prospects
  • Passing driving test
These are all circumstances of somebodies life which I could incorporate into my own designs. I think the obvious ones to go for which I feel are of most importance are passing your driving test, your 18th birthday, Graduation and getting married. I think for each situation there is enough to use.
Driving test
Passing your driving test is a huge milestone in anybodies life. It is a life skill and the end of months of practice and money. Therefore I think it would be suitable to use for my organ donor design persuaders. There are many aspects of this which I could use in my designs. Mainly being parts on the car, e.g steering wheel, wheels, or the actual body of the car. I think incorporating pieces of the car could work well in the style of the previous posters I have looked at.
I began to look at different ways into designing a poster based around driving. I decided I was going to use the title 'Tom was able to pass his driving test after Jack donated a lung, which was in my mock up designs. But I decided that it was too much of a mouthful if I was going to use typography as the main focus of my designs. So I shortened the text to 'Will passed his driving test first time'. I decided this was going to feature as the main text on the poster and below would be a description on whom donated what particular organ, and how it was made possible.

This is the basic design on paper what I decided I would develop after mind mapping different ideas etc. I feel this is the best way to represent the event without going into to much depth. As you can see, I have drawn out many lines and dots running alongside the text which gives it a professional finish.

This is what the final outcome looks like for the driving test option. I decided I needed to look for different typefaces which were professional and legible. I used Khimer UI and Kalinga for the main fonts featured at the top. As you can see, the steering wheel is very much the focus point on the piece. I decided to shape the text around it as it is different to the same old plain formatting. Different to my previous designs, I have taken out all of the sub heading's involving organ donation as well as the NHS logo and placed the original logo at the top. I feel this way the logo is recognisable anyway and it adds to the design regardless. Also, I decided to change the original colours of red as I felt if I was going to change the design, I may as well alter the identity also. I feel the colouring works well with the imagery also.

18th Birthday

Your 18th birthday is the first major celebration of anybodies life, so i decided to base one of my posters around it. Again, a birthday party holds many opportunities to take with so many factors coming together to create the party. Things such as birthday cakes, balloons, party poppers, candels. These can all be used as an identity in my final designs. Again as to my previous design, I shortened the title to 'Tom was able to celebrate his 18th in style', with the previous one being too long to adapt into my typography.

This again is the final draw up I decided to go on and design. As you can see, I have taken the balloon aspect out of the occasion and placed it at the topof the page, as the forefront. I have also sketched out various lines coming off certain parts of the title. And emphasized the most important parts of the sentence by making them larger and leaving extra leading between the line above.

This is the final outcome for my 18th birthday design. As you can see, I slightly altered the balloon arrangement which was once at the top, to down each side. Again I have kept consistent by using the same method of layout; organ donor symbol at the top and info at the bottom. Again, to keep in with consistency I have decided that I would use the same typefaces as the previous design. As well as the text at the bottom of the page. This time though, I have used red as the primary colour. In my opinion I think the piece looks professional and sleek. All my designs are going to adopt the same initial base, as I think consistency in design is key.

Graduation

Graduation again, is a key part of any young person's life. It is the divide between education and beginning to start in the working world. And again, I thought that I could use the obvious factors from it such as robes, scrolls, and caps in my designs.

This is the final sketched outcome produced. I obviously have included the traditional cap in the piece as it represents the whole event very well. I have also replaced the 1 with a certificate scroll.

This is what my final graduation poster looks like.
This time i decided to go for a black primary colour. I feel they all work well with a white background so I didn't feel the need to change it. I have altered my final from my sketches as I have only one cap and I have made '1st' bolder to state its importance. As a series of posters I think they all work well together and send out the message strongly. The icon at the top clearly demonstrates that its for organ donation also. Again I have used the same typefaces and provided font styles on the major parts of information. I had to provide different levels of thickness on the font at the bottom of the page between each line otherwise it would look like a plain block of text.

Wedding Day

For my final design, I had to include a wedding day as it is such a momentous occasion in somebodies life. I narrowed the title down to 'Paul helped Holly celebrate her wedding day'. I chose to design based on this event again because of the possibilities I could use. Every aspect of a wedding day is recognisable; e.g wedding ring, champagne, dress, suits etc.

This is the last sketch I made of my final wedding day piece. As you can see, I have included the symbol of two champagne classes as a centre piece, and also two party poppers on either side of the design. I think they represent the event well enough. I have kept the base similar and the text will also run in consistency with the previous three.

This is the final outcome to my wedding day design. As it was 'holly's' special day I thought it be appropriate that the primary colour be pink. Again it works well on the white background.  I think the images I have used look particularly abstract and work well with the text put in place. I think changing the whole colour for each design was important as I needed to show variety. I think the posters are eye catching and personally I feel that this typography style would make anybody stop and look what its for.

I placed the image into a real life scenario just to get the perspective of it being real. So I found a typical bus stop and then imported the image. This is the darkest of the primary colours used out of my designs but even so I still think it would grab someones attention. I feel as though the fresh design of typography would interest the general public into looking into what the cause is.

I also was required to produce a brochure as part of the brief. I decided that I was going to design so it was majority image based, rather than what I had previously produced with my posters. I wanted to put a face to my posters, and visually see the events taking place.

These are the second and third pages of my spread. As you can see, I have generated certain images of real life scenario's shown them in brochure form. This relates to the poster I created for the wedding. I have added a small quote at the top of the page in a nice san serif font. I went on the main organ donation website and looked at what text they used so I could replicate it in my own designs.

Again, I have looked at what I have used for my subjects in my poster designs and replicated the theme on this piece. I have added a small subtitle underneath the quote stating the name of the person featured and their age. The official organ donation website has a very basic layout with the primary colours being red, blue and on a white background. I only have two pages with information on and I felt the reasoning behind why people should donate as well as how to register to become an organ donor were the major areas.

All the images in the brochure run well together as the imagery is consistent. There is a soft tint of colour on each slide which I think adds a professional edge to the piece. Again I have used every scenario shown in my poster designs, as I want to put a face to the name.

 Conclusion

To start the project, I didn't really go into much depth of mind mapping as I picked up my idea fairly quickly. I think that the idea to show the positive side of organ donation instead of the negatives for not giving was a fresh approach. After researching previous Organ Donor advertising campaigns I established that this idea was fresh. Previous posters focused on the actual organs themselves which in my opinion didn't appeal to the audience. I took into consideration the target audience which was anybody aged 18-50 and thought typography would provide a modern approach.

My initial designs were too focused on imagery and after checking with my tutor and peers etc I established that this would be the wrong route to go down. I feel that the base i came up with looked professional and suitable, just the imagery was dull and didn't project any form of positivity.

I feel that my research was in depth and I learnt alot from there on how I needed to progress. Although I feel at stages that my developement was slightly light(mainly due to establishing a rough idea of my outcome early on in the process). I feel that I learnt alot about the style I wanted to create from looking at other deisngers work. I gained a lot of inspiration from this.

My outcomes I feel have turned out professional, and I wouldn't be suprised if I had seen them in a professional environment. They all work well as a group and have a solid structure. I feel the colours used in the posters represent the individuals feelings about 'their day' well and even on a white background I feel there is pleanty of life in the work. I feel the text is eligable and the fonts I selected are clean and make a bold statement. The only thing I think I could have improved on is looking further in depth into what fonts I could have potentially used. I feel my illustrations work well in conjunction with the text; they compliment each other well.

My brochure took on a different, more professional approach to the cause. I had shown in my posters the message I wanted to get across in terms of typography, so I decided I wanted to show the faces behind the names. I think it looks sleek and good quality. I took on some variables from the website in terms of text and colours used as i wanted it to look the same corporate style. I think if I had done anything different, I would have tried to generate my own imagery for the brochure, even though it would have been majorly time consuming and the picture quality would not be as good.

Purdey's

Purdey's

We have been given the task to re-brand Purdey's, the vintage energy type drink. It was established in the early 90's and was later bought out by Britvic, but it's still kept it's unique packaging and design.

Shown right,  is the current Purdey's packaging design. Although it has been out for over two decades, to me it looks fairly modern. It is fairly hard to come across with only a couple of big retail companies stocking it on their shelves. You would find it in a typical urban style vintage shop.
The small illustrations towards the top of the bottle keep it simple, but at the same time show what ingredients are involved in the making of Purdey's.

The brand prides itself on the fact that it's the original natural health drink. If you look at health concerned based drinks these days, you'd think colour instantly. The fact that the packaging on this is silver and doesn't really shout out 'health drink' is probably why it has gone un-noticed.

I need to review different types of energy/health drinks  and potentially find a way of finding my own style to develop. They want me to find a way of making the brand fresh and in-market, but also not to lose the integrity and identity of what it has portrayed up until now.

I looked online to see what traces of advertisement I could find for Purdey's. This is a poster design which looks like it was released in the 90's. As we all know, purdey's pride themselves on health and well being. This piece doesn't automatically stand out as eye catching as you have to read the description to find what it is meant to be demonstrating. The piece pictures an old man in quite good shape posing as if he's a body builder. The text states that Purdey's is his source of energy. I like the concept of the piece but i don't agree with the way that it has been displayed as its not very clear.

The Piece on the left is obviously part of the same advertising campaign. These designs seem to be taking an oriental theme. It demonstrates that Purdey's basically keeps you switched on at all times, alerted at all times. They have cleverly used an analogy to demonstrate this meaning. Searching for Purdey's advertisements was quite difficult as it is such a low key unique brand. It has a reputation of being an urban type of drink and i think these posters summarise this.

Although Purdey's have been around since the early 90's, with this advert they seem to have gone further into the past. Again its main aim is to show that they are all about health and well being, so they have pictured a woman with a very old method of decreasing 'double chins' using some sort of pulling mechanism. They state that achieving this could be made a lot easier by drinking Purdey's on a regular basis as a substitute. The style of the piece is very old fashioned, with the colour scheme and the chosen text style.

Again, they have tried to demonstrate the old 50's type style with what appears to be a sketch of somebody out of a freak show. 'Rediscover the animal within' is the slogan. All the advertisements up to press seem to be health orientated. I could either look at replicating this theme or potentially developing my own theme for it.

These are modern day energy drinks. As you can see, they are heavily metaphor orientated. The Gatorade ad demonstrates the image of a boxer knocking another down. The losing boxer is pictured as a different energy drink form of energy drink, showing that Gatorade is the superior. Advertising needs to be bright and to catch the eye, and these shown above, are great examples of it.
Innocent is probably the most famous health drink today. Its innovative and eye catching designs have a big part to play in the selling of this product. The design of the bottle itself is very basic, with only the colour on the bottles showing the difference between flavour. They find it important to show how much fruit goes into their product, so they have added a personality to the fruit itself. This could be the type of thing i need to think about when designing my own bottles.

This is another range of health drinks. As you can see the bottles are often colour co-ordinated to their own set flavour. With the Purdey's brief only asking for two different designs, I probably won't be able to run down the same route. To me these designs seem a bit too obvious and don't really demonstrate much imagination or thought. I want to make my designs more abstract.

Again, this is is a similar design to the previous one. The colour scheme is very basic with just one colour surrounding the bottle. I want my bottles to stand out from the others.
This is another fruit drink called 'sweetbird'. I need to think about the design of the actual package itself. Purdey's pride themselves on specific look of the packaging, as it is unique and makes them different to the rest of the market. Again the designs on the actual bottle are basic, with little abstraction.

I think the designs on these two bottles are very creative. This company have designed two different forms of health drink to take at different times of the day. I like the way the colours used are completely relevant to the type of drink. We have been tasked to create a brother drink to the original 'rejuvinate' type. It is an idea worth thinking about in the future.
I particularly like the designs on these fruit drinks. The actual number itself takes the for front rather than the brand name. It is similar to other health drinks in terms of packaging, as the bottle shape and colour scheme is very similar. This is where Purdey's differentiates. I am thinking about trying to incorporate

I could potentially look at involving health related symbols on my designs as well. Hearts are a standard symbol used in this sort of circumstance so I think it would be too cliche' to use it myself. Again the main factor on this design is the colouring. The hardest part about my own designs will be trying to take on this form of design, but keeping the silver type identity.

This is another range of Purdey's which I found on the web. It looks like they have previously attempted a range of energy drink. They have adapted the standard bottle design and added a gold casing. I think this design is suitable for the flavour of drink, and the colour design would certainly stand out on the shelf.

These are a very recent brand of fruit drink at the minute. Again, they are very similar to previous designs I have looked at. I could potentially look at keeping the same colour scheme but with different lid colours to represent the flavour.

Looking at previous Purdey's forms of advertising, I have noticed a few things. Despite the company forming in the 1990's the style of some of their early adverts are almost 60's like. I think that re inventing this type of style could work in my favour. I need to start looking at this sort of style, and then replicate this myself. This sort of design is something what I think id be able to re-produce.

These are a couple of designs which I found on the Internet for a modern day beer, I like the old, groovy type designs. Its not particularly relevant to fruit based drinks, but I may take factors from these designs ans apply them in my own work.

Its worth thinking about designing a new icon or logo for Purdeys, as at the minute they don't really have a unique part on their design. This piece shown to the left has a little owl on it, and they have worked the sorrounding colours to work well in contrast with it. Again, my previous idea of different colours around the stem of the bottle or bottle top lids have been used in this piece.

This is an old style design for Dr pepper in the 1950's. With a lot of 50's design, this cartoon, glossy effect is used quite often. This would be worth thinking about when applying to my own designs. Its almost like a bubble wrap finish sorrounding the piece. I could use this effect when I have chosen how to portray my advertisements.

This is another advert for a soft drink in the 50's. I am quite a fan of this type of design. They are all very similar in a way that shows young couples/people enjoying the drink in a regular environment. The people in the adverts are well dressed and fit the stereotype of the 'perfect young person' at the time. I want to take on this type of theme but then add my own twist to it. The twist will be energy orientated as that is the whole theme of it.

This is another Pepsi advertisement from the 50's. As you can see, it features a well dressed, prim and proper housewife whom has prepared a meal for what looks like the rest of her family. This is the type of advertisement which dominated the 50's and 60's. There was not much thought involved, just the basic display of the product.

This is a design on a selection of drinks which i have found online. I think it is completely relevant to a design I am aiming for. The text used on these drinks is completely relevant to its design. I think the lack of colouring really compliments the piece, as it doesn't need to be the forefront . The style of the text needs to correspond with the logo's/images and needs to keep consistency.
I think I need to develop my own logo, and take some of the factors used on these bottles.

This is another design for a cold coffee brew which I am particularly fond of. It caught my eye due to the contrasting black and white colours, as well as the type of text used. It also has reminded me that I don;t have to necessarily keep the original bottle shape that Purdey's holds.

Whilst looking at old style bottle designs on the Internet, I found these designs for 'almond water'. They are student designs but I am particularly fond of them. I like the way they have used shapes and different tones of colour to make certain aspects stand out. The designs on the bottles are consistent, and really work well together. There are no major logo designs on the piece, so the actual text takes the forefront of the bottle. As I have to design a brother bottle to the rejuvenate I need to think about what colours would be best suited.

I need to establish a type of font and colour scheme for my title/logo. Again, this caught my eye immediately. The font to me really screams vintage design, and that is what I need to re-capture in my work. The patterns used on this piece also represent an older time, which I could potentially look into replicating in my own work.

Although these aren't designs for drinks, I like the way they have been put together. I am beginning to like the way the black colouring contrasts with the white, not just on this design, but others previously also. The set colouring for Purdey's is silver wrapping on a brown bottle, but I think I could potentially introduce this colour scheme somewhere on the bottle.

I was advised to look at things like old packaging designs for mints and shoe polish also. This is because at the time the traditional design stretched over a number of products. It was the way to design at the time. The thing that attracted me to this design again was the type. I like the long thin, retro look it keeps.

My tutor recommended looking at old shoe polish tins, as he thought I'd gain inspiration from the designs.  I can see where he is coming from as the main typefaces are different.

I think that re-developing Purdey's by using a traditional typeface and design will ironically make it more appealing in the modern era. This shoe polish has a traditional logo design at the top to represent 'bowers'.

This is just an advert I found for a cafe' in the US. Again, its not particularly relevant to the drinks industry but I feel the text used is creative. Again the two contrasting colours pay a large part of making the piece look such a high quality.

This is a Guinness advert from the 50's. Back then they believed that Guinness actually increased energy and strength, and didn't think of the repercussions. There was an ad campaign at the time demonstrating analogies of people performing superhuman tasks, such as this one shown left. As Purdey's is prided on revitalisation as well as to energise you, this type of advertisement could work in my favour.

This is a Christmas edition of the previous advert. Advertising this way for an alcoholic drink would be frowned upon these days but if I was to use these methods with Purdey's

These two posters are part of the same advertising range. Some of the old Purdey's Rejuvenate posters ran with the same theme, but didn't demonstrate it as well in my opinion. I think bringing out a new range like this could be very effective.

This is a drink of our era, crabbies ginger beer. They are demonstrating the same theme that I am trying to incorporate. They have a 50's style to all their adverts. 'Refreshing Ginger Beer, only for grownups' is the slogan used on this particular poster. The typeface is very suited to the cause and the way its been designed is similar to previous posters I have looked at.

This is an advert for Crabbies which I have found on Youtube. As you can see, it is based in a traditional kitchen with a typical well dressed Housewife featuring. Some of the catchphrases used drive home the message they are tying to send out, like 'tickateeboo tasty'.

Again, we have a very basic design with a catchy slogan at the top. They have used eye catching colours which is always a plus point on a poster. Although this time they have used a different typeface on the poster. It doesn't look as traditional but still keeps up consistency.

Again, they have really replicated the 50's style adverts showing a young couple in an old fashioned circumstance. They keep their advertisements consistent by using the same coloured background every time. Trying to replicate old adverts is potentially something I could look to use in my own designs.

After mind mapping in lesson, and asking other students opinions on what you might associate with the 50's, I came up with an additional idea.  Moustache's were very popular in the early 1900's right up until the 70's. This would work well with my 50's theme.

I looked at typical moustache's that you'd associate with different countries. As you can see above, I felt that something similar to the Italian stash would be suitable as I personally think it represents the old fashioned British stash too.

This is the character which I have designed for my Purdey's bottles. I feel that it summarises the theme brilliantly. The stash represents the style of my bottles well, and the heart sums up the purpose of Purdey's itself. It's job is to restore energy and to keep the heart in well working order. I think as a graphic it looks professional and adequate for the cause.

This is the basic bottle design which I have designed for the original flavour. As you can see, I have kept the original silver wrapping as I don't want to take away the significant identity of Purdey's. I have also added a soft pattern which runs around the top and bottom of the bottle. I have taken inspiration from previous designs which I have researched. I think they look professional and are quite fitting. This is just the base of the image, as I am going to drag these into In-Design and add text etc.

These are the two logo designs I have made for the two types of Purdey's flavours. I have used the font type 'harrington' and for the lettering above 'Footlight MT light'. I personally feel they look professional and will work on my bottles well.

This is what the Bottle looks like almost complete. After getting the opinion of my fellow students I wasn't as happy with the design as before. Some pointed out that the moustache was a vital part of the piece and I agreed. So I have decided to adapt my design and to make the stash the forefront of the picture.
Also after reassessing, I feel that the main title feature doesn't represent Purdey's as well as I'd hoped it would do.

I thought that if I was going to make the stash the forefront of the design, I could use a number of different styles of moustache and bring out a 'new range'. I could potentially run a competition for people as well offering the chance to enter their moustache designs. I could pretend that the competition could run in conjunction with 'movember' as it has previously been successful for a number of different companies.
I want my own design to look similar to this one. It is an advert for denim which I found online. To me, it seems perfect for the type of design I am looking for. I need something slick with a fine finish that not only looks professional, but is fit for purpose.

This is my new design for the Purdey's Original logo. As you can see, I have taken inspiration from the previous logo. I have added a border around the design also and a bottle top hovering just above it. I have downloaded a font for the 'Purdey's' which is 'Branboll fet'. And the original is in type 'handshop typography'. I personally think the design looks professional and it would look great on any bottle/poster or corporate manual.

This is how my final Purdey's bottle looks. As you can see, I have adapted the moustache, heart and eyes to take the forefront of the image. As previously stated in my research, I have liked the contrast between black and white/silver on other designs, so I decided to apply it on my own work. I personally like the way the logo works with the facial features. In my opinion, I wouldn't be surprised to see this in any shop or establishment.

This is my Natural energy Purdey's edition. As you can see, I have kept the same bottle shape, and changed the colour to neon orange. I looked at different forms of colour related to natural energy and the majority I found were yellow, orange and reds. I feel that orange really complements the piece though and found that it contrasted the best with black. As you can see, to represent energy I have tweaked the eyes to open them fully. I have also put a heart beat inside the heart on the piece and coloured in white for maximum contrast. As a duo, I think the two designs correspond with each other well and the consistency is there.

This is my final design for the competition idea which I came up with. After looking at different types of 50's design, I noticed that the old type paper was used quite frequently. So I decided to apply this style to my own designs. I applied the main logo design to the piece as well as the bottle design. I obviously added an effect to the bottle itself as well to give it that old authenticity. The text basically explains that anybody can have the chance to apply to have their own moustache design put on the Purdey's bottles. I finished the article with the slogan 'chin chin' which is also a typical old fashioned saying.

This is the Poster design for the natural energy flavour. I felt I needed to create a separate poster for this as it's a new flavour, and people need to know about it. I have gone for a fairly abstract design with this piece which I think works well with the bottle design. I feel that it works in consistency with the other designs, and still contains its old fashioned properties.
This is another of my final posters. I took every different moustache design I created and lined them up together. If this range was to be released, they would be released as a range. I have taken inspiration from the 'crabbies ginger beer' adverts as the backdrop on their poster designs were bright and colourful. I feel this again is fairly abstract, but I have tried to keep it as simple as possible.

Overall, I think the project has gone quite well. I have researched my cause well and answered all of the questions on the brief. I feel I have ticked all the requirements for the research part of the brief. I feel I could have included more in terms of development as well. I feel that my time management let me down as I didn't establish a final idea until fairly late on. Although, I feel my final pieces are of a good standard, look professional, and reach all requirements set. I feel they are consistent and run well in correlation with each other.
